Frequently Asked Questions
What instruments do you teach? Acoustic guitar, electric guitar, classical guitar and electric bass are taught along with theory, ear training and composition.
Do you present concerts? Students give two concerts per year that are free to the public. I also offer two rock jams where students play songs in a rock band setting. A recording studio is available for those who wish to make their own CDs.
What age of students do you accept? The majority of students are between the ages of 8 and 16. I also teach many adults and senior citizens. For children below the age of 8, I suggest coming in for a free consultation prior to registering.
How long are the lessons? Most students take one half hour per week. Advanced students often prefer 45 minute or 1 hour lessons.
When do you teach? Lessons are offered Monday to Thursday between 2:00pm and 9:00pm. I am highly committed to teaching and I take pride in the fact that I rarely cancel or reschedule lessons. Due to my performing schedule I am unable to commit to weekend teaching.
Can I try a lesson? You are welcome to come in for a free trial lesson/ consultation.
What training do you have? I hold a Bachelor of Music Degree, Honours in Music Education (Instrumental Option) from McGill University.
What experience do you have? Private music teaching has been my "day job" since 1997. Prior to opening the Carleton Guitar Studio in September of 2000, I worked for a number of institutions including the Balthazar School of Music, the Manotick Guitar School and the Grenville Christian College. I have taught over 300 students and my effectiveness can be seen in their successes. Some have received top marks on Royal Conservatory of Music exams while others have been accepted into university music programs and toured Canada in a variety of musical ensembles. I am in demand as a clinician and have given over 30 clinics in music classes at Ottawa area high schools covering topics such as song analysis, composition and guitar techniques.
Do you perform yourself? I have performed in everything from chamber ensembles to rock bands to orchestras, even a steel band! Currently I am very active as a solo singer/songwriter. Please visit my artist website: www.carletonbovell.com
